Planting Perfection: Top tips for outdoor planters

April 11, 2024

Are you ready to elevate your outdoor space with stunning planters? This might be our most favorite time of year! It’s a warm spring day, iced coffee in hand, and it’s time to shop for all the new plants and planters for our outdoor patios. But sometimes walking into a greenhouse can be overwhelming if you don’t have a plan with what planters you need to fill or what direction you want to lean with color palette. So, we’ve got you covered with our top tips for creating and building outdoor planters that will turn heads and bring your garden to life, and keep these shopping trips simple!

1. Choose the location of the planter! You want to consider the sunlight exposure your planter will be in because this will guide what plants you want to choose!

2. Find a planter that you love! The type of planter you choose can also impact the success of your outdoor planters. Ensure your planter has proper drainage to prevent waterlogged soil, which can lead to root rot. Don’t forget to grab a bag of drainage rocks to have on hand!

3. Now the fun starts – Select the Right Plants: The key to a successful outdoor planter is selecting the right plants. Remember the location of your planter – is it in full sun, partial shade, or full shade? Choose plants that thrive in your specific conditions. The key to creating a beautiful planter is maximizing visual interest, by mixing textures and heights, and coordinating colors.

Spill: Select plants that spill over the edges of the planter, creating a cascading effect. Ivy, petunias, and our personal favorite, sweet potato vine are great options for spill plants.

Thrill: Choose a focal point plant that adds height and drama to your planter. This could be a tall grass, a striking flower, or a small tree, depending on the size of your planter.

Fill: Finally, fill in the remaining space with filler plants that add color and texture. Consider using a mix of flowers, grasses, and foliage plants for a dynamic look.

As you begin to plant your planter, it is imperative that you use drainage rock, and a high-quality potting mix that is well-draining and nutrient-rich to ensure your plants have the best growing environment.

4. Maintain Your Planter: Once your outdoor planter is set up, it’s important to maintain it properly. Water your plants regularly, but be careful not to overwater. Create a watering schedule and involve your family. Fertilize your plants as needed to keep them healthy and thriving. Trim back as needed!

With these top tips, you’ll be well on your way to creating beautiful outdoor planters that will enhance your outdoor space and bring joy all season long. Happy planting!
